Trauma and Disability: What Attorneys and Advocates Need to Know

Jan262022

From 11:00 AM until 12:30 PM ET

Presented by the NY Crime Victims Legal Network, Empire Justice Center / Jaclyn Segouin, jsegouin@empirejustice.org

The Social Security Administration’s program for disabled individuals offers benefits to those who cannot work for health reasons. The CLE will provide an overview of the disability program, including medical and financial requirements. We will discuss how to effectively represent clients who have experienced trauma as a result of domestic violence, military service, hate crimes, poverty, displacement, and incarceration, and may be eligible for disability. We will share the kinds of evidence that can help support a new claim. We will also discuss how to effectively interact with SSA for clients who are currently receiving disability but need assistance to navigate the system.

Presenters:

Emilia Sicilia, Senior Attorney & DAP Statewide Coordinator, Empire Justice Center
Jennifer Karr, Senior Attorney, Empire Justice Center
