This session will provide an overview of the state of the field of addressing sexual violence in higher education with a focus on engaging boys and men. The discussion will offer new perspectives on bystander behavior programs and education around “consent.” The goal of this session is provide strategies to build sustainable programming to engage men; taking this beyond prevention and toward healthy relationships and aspirational masculinity.

 

About the Speaker:

Don McPherson is the author of You Throw Like a Girl: The Blind Spot of Masculinity, which chronicles thirty-five years of harnessing the power and appeal of sport to address complex social justice issues. You Throw Like a Girl is an acute examination of gender-based violence and introduces “aspirational masculinity” to the conversation and work of engaging men. McPherson was an All-America quarterback at Syracuse University and is a member of the college football hall fame. In 1994, he began addressing issues of men’s violence against women; focused on higher education, athletics, and engaging boys and men. He served on NCAA Task Force and Commission to Combat Campus Sexual Assault and is currently on the Board of Advisors Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities at Stony Brook University.
